More schools offering Chinese; educators see it as a language of growing importance

Fueled by the rise of Asian countries in the global marketplace, school districts across metro Toledo are increasingly adding Mandarin Chinese to their list of language offerings.

Chris Steingass, academic dean at St. Francis, said he expects Chinese to be one of the school’s “major languages” in the next few years.

But local educators report finding qualified Chinese teachers has been an obstacle.

“There’s a real shortage of licensed Chinese teachers in Ohio and actually in the country,” said Rosalice Manlove, director of instruction and technology for Ottawa Hills.
