TitleEnglish Languae Proficiency Standards Update
BodyFrom: "Carol Holm"

Hi all! I was at a meeting in Salem on October 27 and 28 regarding English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards. I just wanted to share a couple of things with you.

1.The ELP standards are complete in draft form. They will only be available on the web site at:

http://www.ode.state.or.us/iasa/t3/index.htm.

They exist for all grades K-CIM (10th).
I would encourage you to take a look at them and start using them and making notes about what you find works and doesn't work, typos, etc. At some point, ODE will be interested in collecting your thoughts. The ELP Standards will go to the Board for apporval in June 2004.

2. Carmen West is looking for groups around the state to work on "piloting" the standards. *I think the NWREL will be partnering with ODE on this. Educators involved with this project will have to attend three meetings (1 face to face and 2 over Vtel) and will be paid a small stipend for their participation. *the duration of this project is from now until March. This project involves educators in various settings looking at and using the standards to get feedback and input from the field.
*If you are interested, you should *send and email to .
They are interested in classroom teachers, ESOL endorsed specialists and curriculuum directors.

3.There will be regional meetings where the ELP standards and the Annual Measurable Academic Objectives (a new acronym you will be hearing a lot AMAOs) will be presented. Keep your eyes and ears open.

4.There is talk at ODE about constructing a Spanish Reading Test! It will take a couple years to complete, but there is movement in this direction!

5.In addition to the ELP standards document, there will also be a companion document that will speak to teaching the English language to ELLs. At the beginning here, we will have two documents to help determine what is appropriate for the ELLs in your class. *I think both documents will be a part of the "pilot" project I mentioned above.
