Opts Not to Set Foreign-Language Standards By The Associated Press January 14, 2008 Understanding French, Spanish, or any number of other languages is as invaluable for Pennsylvania's high school graduates as knowing how to write a research paper or solve a math problem, the state's foreign-language teachers say. They argue that the global economy and America's growing diversity demand that students be able to relate to and do business with people from other cultures. So they are dismayed that the State Board of Education has abandoned an effort to adopt rules that would require all students to acquire at least basic foreign-language skills before they graduate. The board's decision became final last week, when a regulatory review panel approved revisions intended to update and clarify Pennsylvania's academic standards. The changes remove foreign languages from the list of school subjects for which the board must establish standards, giving that responsibility to the state education secretary instead.
