TitleBizarre Inventions Activity Idea
Body
Here is a suggested oral activity from a TESL-L listserv user:

This is a very fast and easy activity to put together that will get your students talking and talking and laughing and laughing. Caution: Teachers with many students may need to wear ear protectors due to the high volume of English chatter this activity can inspire.

Below are three sites that feature crazy inventions. Some of these inventions are actually patented! Print out some of the inventions.

Divide the class up into groups of four. Each group will be a company. Let one student from each group randomly select one of the inventions. Each group will first figure out what their invention is. (They may need some help because these inventions are nuts!) Then they decide how they can pitch the invention to others.

Have half of the groups/companies go first as sellers and the other half as customers. Station the sellers in different corners of the room and the customers circulate around the room listening to the various sales pitches. This gets really loud and fun.

The teacher circulates around the room making sure everyone is sticking to English. Low Intermediate groups may have trouble with this but Upper Intermediate and Advanced groups should have no problem sticking to English. (You could assign English police if you want to make sure they only speak English.)

After 15 minutes or so stop the activity. Have the customers vote for the product they liked best. Then repeat the activity with the former company groups as customers and the customers as company groups selling their products.

At the end of the activity explain that it was not just a game but a highly engaging activity that helped them search their memories in a fun and interesting way for English to use to fulfill the tasks.
