A professional development seminar for teachers of German at the junior high, middle school and high school levels will be offered in Austria from July 6-19, 2008, with a focus on Austrian culture. The seminar is sponsored by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Art and Culture, in cooperation with the AATG.

The seminar, conducted in German, will take place in Vienna and Graz, and these cities will be used as springboard for thematic content. Selected themes focusing on Austrian culture will be presented, using various styles of methodology and pedagogy, specifically tailored for instructing students in these age groups. The seminar will include lectures, workshops and individual research.

Themes include: Jung sein in Österreich und anderswo – ein interkultureller Vergleich; Wien und Graz – Stadterkundungen für junge Leute; Literatur für junge LeserInnen; Österreichische Musik im DaF-Unterricht; Das Österreichische Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) für junge LernerInnen; Unterrichtskonzepte für Jugendliche: Theaterpädagogik, Soziales/Interkulturelles/ Globales Lernen; Aktuelle Landeskundematerialien aus Österreich für Jugendliche.

Program costs, room and board, materials and a cultural program are included in the special seminar cost of $980 for AATG members, a substantial reduction from the normal cost. An additional subsidy from the Austrian Federal Ministry of European and International Affairs will be divided equally among AATG participants, further reducing the cost. The amount of the subsidy will be determined by the number of participants.

Application deadline: February 1, 2008. All participants must be AATG members; participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the seminar site. A non-refundable administrative fee of $50 must be submitted with the application.
