Description of Position: This course is part of the ninth grade Eugene International High School (IHS) curriculum and is integrated with Global Literature, Cultural Aesthetics, and Projects, and organized around geographic regions of the globe. The position also includes mentoring and grading students in independent projects for additional credit. In addition, the assignment includes one class delivered and assessed in Spanish as a part of the Spanish Immersion Program.

The teacher must be able to utilize a variety of materials, atlases, almanacs, the Internet, software, maps, to teach students the geography and cultures of peoples around the globe. The teacher must instruct and support students in learning effective research strategies and for the immersion class, in the target language.

Description of skills, knowledge, and expertise:

-Fluency in both written and spoken Spanish
-Knowledge of physical geography and a strong interest in current events, world history, world cultures, and global issues
-Ability to utilize a variety of resources and effectively guide student research
-Familiarity with Internet resources
-Expertise in a variety of social studies areas, including history, geography, sociology, anthropology, economics, and political science
-Demonstrated interest and involvement in international education
-Documented knowledge of the educational and motivational needs of ninth grade students
-Documented repertoire of teaching strategies that includes effective classroom management skills, a focus on higher level thinking skills, that use of Socratic questioning, and active student participation during extended teaching blocks
-Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with students, staff, and parents to maintain an effective school environment.
-Documented success in working cooperatively with other staff in an interdisciplinary approach for curriculum design and delivery
-Willingness to learn and facilitate the IHS requirements for affiliation with the IBO in a timely and effective way
-Demonstrated ability to work with a range of ninth grade students in a challenging curriculum
-Willingness to participate with other staff in collaborative management of the IHS program
