Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL): Building the Base Summer Institutes

WestEd
July 10-14, 17-21, 24-28, 2007
San Francisco Institutes
San Francisco, CA

WestEd is hosting "Building the Base" Summer Institutes for secondary teachers (content and ESL) who work with students who are learning English as a second language. The institutes offer theoretical and practical strategies for effectively teaching the academic language, conceptual understandings, and skills that are critical to ensuring that ELLs can benefit from a successful education. Using new research-based tools and processes developed by the WestEd staff, QTEL presents linguistically and culturally relevant theory and pedagogy in such a way that educators' learning experiences mirror that of their students. QTEL is based on an apprenticeship model of learning in which teachers and teacher educators are provided with experiences that enable them to gradually appropriate abilities necessary for effective teaching of English language learners in diverse teaching contexts.

The institutes for ESL, Language Arts, and Social Studies will be held from July 10-14; the math institutes will be held on July 17-21; the science institutes will occur from July 24-28, 2007.
