Title | Grants For After-School Programs In High Poverty |
Body | From: "VICTOR Brad" Schools, Community Groups Urged to Apply Grants Available For After-School Programs In High Poverty Communities SALEM - State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo has announced an opportunity for communities to begin or expand out-of-school time programs through a competition for $1.5 million for federal 21st Century Comunity Learning Center grants. The program provides grants for communities and schools to offer academic and enrichment programs during out-of-school time and education along with family literacy opportunities for family members of participating children. School districts, education service districts, community-based organizations and faith-based organizations are eligible to apply. The program, which is Title IV B of the federal "No Child Left Behind" Act (NCLB), is targeted toward high-poverty communities to help children achieve academically and provide quality out-of-school programming. Schools and community organizations are encouraged to apply in partnership. Application available: ODE website at http://www.ode.state.or.us/iasa/21stcent/index.htm> . Deadline: Must be postmarked or delivered to ODE by 5:00 p.m. Nov. 18, 2003. To help partnerships develop high quality applications, ODE will offer a series of free videoconferences broadcast to 10 sites around the state and one general question-and-answer session in Salem. Participants should download the application for reference during the videoconferences. Videoconference dates, times and locations: · Sept. 18, 2003, 10 a.m. to noon - Southwestern Community College, Coos Bay; Northwest Regional ESD, Hillsboro; Region 9 ESD, The Dalles. · Sept. 18, 2003, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. -Mazama High School, Klamath Falls; Union-Morrow ESD, Pendleton; Malheur ESD, Vale; High Desert ESD, Redmond. · Sept. 19, 2003, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. - Lane ESD, Eugene; Douglas ESD, Roseburg; Union Baker ESD, Island City. Live audience seating is also available at the broadcast site at the Salem Teleconferencing Center, basement level, Public Service Building, 255 Capitol St. NE, Salem. To attend the videoconferences at the Salem site, applicants are asked to pre-register by sending an e-mail to Carol Elkins at carol.elkins@state.or.us or by calling 503-378-3600 ext. 2713 with name, organization, e-mail address and date and time of video conference.
