The 33-year-old director had already received awards and rave reviews before his film, set in East Berlin in the 1980s, was nominated for best foreign-language Oscar. It was released in the United States this week. Von Donnersmarck's film has been hailed as an intelligent, honest look at how East Germany's Stasi security police shattered lives. The New Yorker magazine commented this week that "if there is any justice" the Academy Award would go to von Donnersmarck, "of whom we have every right to be jealous."
