The Ontario Conference on Applied Linguistics, first organized by the University of Western Ontario in June 2002, specializes in second-language learning and teaching.

Themes include the following:
- recent advances in Applied Linguistics and how they apply to second-language teaching and learning;
- the objectives of second-language teaching methods and the ways in which these objectives are being met;
- the relationship between second-language teaching methods and the spread of societal bilingualism;
- the role schools play in the propagation of societal bilingualism;
- impediments to second-language learning;
- sociolinguistic attitudes towards bilinguality, i.e. bilingualism of the individual;
- sociolinguistic attitudes towards societal bilingualism;
- sociolinguistic attitudes towards second-language teaching methods, such as French immersion;
- , etc.
