First- through fifth-graders at Redner Elementary School in the Lincoln Consolidated Schools district are among 60 students in one of three after-school Spanish classes Redner has offered since October, said Principal David Northrop.

Northrop said the requests for foreign language classes have come from parents concerned about the state's changes in the high school curriculum.

Beginning with the class of 2016, students must have two credits in a foreign language, but that instruction may be given at anytime between kindergarten and 12th grade.

Rick Shaffner, Lincoln curriculum director, said it's possible that the Spanish class at Redner and the French and German classes which recently started at Childs Elementary, all through grant funding, could count toward graduation credits.
