South Florida schools offering Chinese classes

Several schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties -- and across the nation -- have recently started offering Chinese language classes, driven by a need to train today's students for a globally competitive future.

'Many parents want their children to learn these languages because China is a big market today,'' said Blanca Guerra, the Broward school district's curriculum specialist for world languages. ``It's very good for the future that the children learn what they're going to need to learn to compete.''

More people speak a variety of Chinese as a native language than any other language in the world, and Mandarin is the most commonly spoken form of Chinese.

According to the Florida Department of Education, 87 students statewide were enrolled in Chinese I and II last school year. Numbers for this year are not yet available, but there are at least three times that many in Miami-Dade and Broward alone.
