Title | Authentic Listening Materials for Intermediate to Advanced Students |
Body | Here are some recommendations for online listening resources from the TESL listserv. Literacyworks: CNN's Timeless Stories http://www.literacynet.org/cnnsf National Public radio http://www.npr.org The History Channel: Video & speeches http://www.historychannel.com/broadband/home/index.jsp Favorite Poem Project http://www.favoritepoem.org ---- The British Broadcasting Corporation has excellent guided and non-guided programming for the ESL student and teacher. The BBC's radio programming can introduce the ESL learner to a wide variety of English dialects/accents/cultures and non-native speaker inflections(for example, the Asian Network). There are several related sites for the English learner, the English teacher and teaching assistant. http://www.bbc.co.uk I have not yet seen any area of this website designed specifically for the ESL student, but with a bit of teacher preparation, this high quality programming can add a Canadian dimension to your learners' listening comprehension. Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe is a wonderful show that can introduce a bit of Canadian style humour and culture for the adult learner. You can get Vinyl Cafe books on amazon to coordinate/introduce with the aural materials. http://www.cbc.ca/vinylcafe Harding, T. Authentic listening sites. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (10 Jan. 2005). ---- Let me add the NASA site where every week one can hear and download an audio file of Dr. Tony Phillips reading his current space science article of the week. (One can also access an archive and a Spanish version! I use it to improve my Spanish!) The article appears written replete with graphics. His writing and narrating style is breezy and friendly while very informative. I recommend it for intermediate to advanced. http://science.nasa.gov Thurber, D. uthentic listening sites.
