TitleIdeas for Lessons on Directions
Body
Recent discussions on the FLTEACH listserv about activities for practicing giving directions and locations generated many interesting suggestions. Here are two which begin with reading and writing before adding an oral component.

----

I had my students draw a big city (on large paper) that had streets, buildings, parking lots, plazas, etc. After they labeled and drew the city I gave them a list of directions. I had them start at one of the plazas and they had to work themselves around the city based on the directions I gave to them. After each question they had to tell me which building or monument they were in front of. Then I had them give me directions from one place in the city to the next. They navigated through their city with a matchbox car, which added a lot of fun.

I have given students a map of Paris. I tell them to choose a mystery road on the map. I then have them write out instructions to get to this destination from the Eiffel Tower. They then trade written descriptions with a partner who tries to follow the directions on the map and find the mystery road. We then do the same exercise with a map of a smaller town and I have them give the directions to their partner orally while their partner traces the route with their finger. My students enjoy this activity a great deal.
