Pilot Test Opportunity for Northwest Educators!

Interested in participating in a pilot study to develop culturally
responsive, standards-based teaching strategies?

Starting in August 2003, we will be testing a new training and resource manual, Classroom to Community and Back: Using Culturally Responsive, Standards-Based Teaching to Strengthen Family and Community Partnerships and Increase Student Achievement. This is a practical guide designed to help educators develop teaching strategies that draw on the knowledge, skills, experiences, and culture of families and community members to enhance learning and help all students meet high academic standards.

During this pilot study, participants will learn to:
- Develop lessons that infuse the culture of their students' family and community into the classroom and school in ways that enrich teaching and enhance student success
- Increase the relevance of the curriculum for their students
- Engage family and community in classroom learning
- Collaborate with other teachers to plan culturally responsive teaching across subject areas all within a standards-based curriculum

- Document their experiences through surveys, written and group reflection, and lesson descriptions (see Documentation Guide)
- Receive on-going technical assistance (phone, email, consultation, etc.) throughout the school year

In addition to the activities above, 20-25 participants will be invited to attend a Summer Institute on August 21-22 from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (each day) in Portland, Oregon. (Travel and lodging will be paid!) Detailed information regarding travel, hotel accommodations, and training site will be sent to you after applicants have been selected. (Let us know on the application if you are interested or available to attend.)

To ensure the validity of this study and encourage diversity, we will be choosing a variety of sites to participate, including elementary,
middle/junior high, and high schools; urban and rural; small and large; variety in SES of the students; and diversity in languages and cultures.
