Body | Are you looking for a way to bring the upcoming Olympic games into your class? Here are some ideas and resources. Some of these are language-specific but may be altered for any language. I gave each of the German speaking-countries as well as the USA their own columns and I drew the appropriate flags. Each morning I update the medal counts with a gold/silver/red star sticker per medal. Sometimes I ask extra credit questions on quizzes that pertain to my poster. This year I've decided to have each class choose the country they think will win the most medals. I'll list the name of each class on a separate poster with the country they're supporting. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (8 Feb. 2006). ---- I hung up 3 strips of roll paper in the hall outside my classroom - 1 with a picture of the gold medal that will be handed out in Torino, 1 with the silver medal and 1 with the bronze. I also printed a bunch of little American, German, Austrian, and Swiss flags. I'll assign each of my classes a couple of events to keep track of. Each day, they'll come in and look at the medal counts. When any of the countries listed earns a medal, they'll get one of the flags, write the names of the event and the athlete on the flag, and hang the flag on its poster in the hall. I've done this in the past and the kids get really into it. For even more fun, we invite the Spanish and French classes to participate. Ott, Christie. [AATG-L] Olympics. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (9 Feb. 2006). ---- In order to get kids actively interested but not weigh them down with more "homework", I made a small competition out of it similar to guessing how many jellybeans are in a jar. Each student picked one country to root for. Then, they put their estimate of how many medals they think their country is going to win. At the end of the two weeks, the students who are closest to the actual medal count will win a prize. That way, more students win.
