| Body | A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for number practice ideas received the following suggestions. ---- Number/Math Practice with Playing Cards For this game you need a deck of playing cards for every two students in your class. If you dont have 20 decks of cards on hand, just ask students to bring in old decks of cards from home. The decks dont need to be complete. 1. Flashcards: Students work with a partner. One holds up the playing card; the other says the number in the target language. Aces are 1 and all face cards are 10. Jokers are not used. This gives the students practice with numbers up to 10. 2. Contest: One student turns over the card. The first student who can say the number takes the card. After allotted time, students count cards to determine winner. This gives the students practice with numbers up to 10. 3. Addition: Students work with a partner. Divide the deck approximately in half. Each partner has half of the cards. Both partners turn over a card at the same time. The student who says the sum of the cards (add them together) in the target language first takes both cards. This gives students practice with the numbers up to 20. 4. Multiplication: Students work with a partner. Divide the deck approximately in half. Each partner has half of the cards. Both partners turn over a card at the same time. The student who says the product of the cards (multiply them together) in the target language first takes both cards. This gives students practice with the numbers up to 100. 5. Higher numbers: Turn over three cards. Face cards represent 0. This gives students practice with numbers up to 1000.
