| Body | Recently a subscriber to the FLTEACH listserv asked the French equivalent of "meerkat," one of the animals in "The Lion King." (The answer: 'le suricate.') Several responses recommended an online dictionary from l'Office québécois de la langue française, accessible at http://www.granddictionnaire.ca , as particularly useful when researching unusual terminology such as this. One post (below) gave some tips for finding accurate translations. ---- When translating the names of plants or animals, it's often best to find out what their Linnaean Latin names are first, in this case "Suricata suricata", before rendering such names into another language. The Latin name can be used as a fixed reference point when verifying, say, via the Web whether the correct nomenclature has been chosen in the other language. Not too much of a problem with a meerkat, but there can be big problems when translating the names of edible fish, for example "redfish", into other languages. Wilson, D.
