TitleIdeas for Cognate Activities
Body
A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for activities for learning about cognates received the following reply from a Spanish teacher. This type of activity might be useful for teachers of beginning learners of any language which shares similar vocabulary with English.

----

1. Use the Pledge of Allegiance to introduce cognates and show the students that they can understand.

2. Get pictures or clip art of different people/animals: actor, actress, doctor, student, detective, elephant, gorilla, etc. Give each person a name and make a list of the professions/words in Spanish. Have students match them and write a sentence in Spanish. You can make this into a worksheet, do a paired or group activity, or post pictures around the room, have students match sentences or the words and then write the sentences.

3. Bulletin Board: Have the students bring in the words or picture/word.

4. Adjectives: You can use a Venn diagram to use cognates to describe themselves and a friend and characteristics they have in common.

5. Pronunciation practice: Divide class into teams to practice pronunciation/spelling.

6. Dictionary practice: Pair the students and have them discover the cognates.

7. Find a simple reading, have the students make a list of the cognates and then draw the content to show their understanding.
