TitleIdeas for Literature Activities
Body
A recent request for activity ideas for a unit on Uraguyan writer Horacio Quiroga received the following suggestions. Although these are ideas for a Spanish unit, the same ideas may be applied to literature activities for other languages.

----

We act out "El paso del Yabebiri" - kids take the roles of rayas, tigers, the fox, the dorados, the man, the carpinchito (a favorite even if he doesn't have any lines). There is a lot to discuss afterwards in terms of what lessons can be drawn from the story, in terms of the traits of the various characters.

One of my students wrote an essay comparing Quiroga's short stories and Kipling's Just So Stories. Pretty cool.

With "Las medias de los flamencos" we role-played interviews with the author and the characters. They did a Joan Rivers red carpet-style entrance for the animals at the party. Then a news report after the party interviewing the store owner, the snakes, the owl, etc.

With "La abeja haragana" we sat in a circle and retold the story. Each person picked up where the previous person left off (usually in mid-sentence) when I gave a signal (maraca, bell, etc.). If they messed up the story, the next person had to start from the beginning. Everyone pays attention because 1) if the story restarts, they don't want to be the ones responsible for retelling it incorrectly, and 2) they have to be ready to continue where the last person left off. If they were unsure what to say next, they could ask a question of the rest of the class.

Students wrote their own stories to complete the unit.
