TitleActivity Ideas: The Rooms of a House
Body
A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for suggestions on how to teach the rooms of a house in French received the following replies. Although the target language is French, these activities could be used with learners of any language and a wide range of ages.

----

Put pictures of rooms of a house around the classrooms and do some TPR. Marchez au chambre a coucher, mangez, touchez, etc. (Walk to the bedroom, eat, touch, etc.) After a few days have students create their own commands to give to another group to do.

If they have access, they could take you on a video tour of their home (or a friend's home) and narrate as they go.

I ask them to create a house out of a cardboard box. They can use any size box they want (some like to work in bigger spaces and others don't) and they can work with one partner or alone. They must decorate the rooms and add furniture and other things. They have two class periods of 50 minutes each; the rest must be done outside of class. They have to label everything. Then they write a short paper describing their house, inside and out: example-big or small, whether it's wooden or brick, color of house, etc.

Sur une feuille de rétroprojecteur, j'ai dessiné une maison à 2 étages coupée par le milieu de sorte qu'on peut voir les pièces et les meubles à l'intérieur. J'ai naturellement placé les meubles dans des pièces inadaptées (par exemple: un fauteuil dans la salle de bains ou le tube de dentifrice dans la cuisine). Le but est naturellement de retrouver les erreurs en faisant des phrases comme "Dans la cuisine, il y a ....".

Translation: On a transparency, I drew a section of a 2-story house where you can see the rooms and the furniture inside. I put the furniture in the wrong place (for example: an armchair in the bathroom or a tube of toothpaste in the kitchen). The point is naturally to find the errors while making sentences like "In the kitchen, there is a..."
