This blog post discusses the pros and cons of learners using the standardized HSK test as a blueprint for how one should learn Chinese, especially given the prominence of the test as both a reference in learning materials and an access point to education and employment opportunities. While the article suggests that the test can provide useful snapshots of learners’ current abilities (especially in receptive skills), it recognizes that, like most standardized tests, the HSK does not prepare learners with real-world communicative skills. Learners who are required to take this test, along with those looking to better self-define their own benchmarks and goals, would find this resource useful in helping think through what studying to this test will, and won’t, prepare them to do.
