The description of Assessing Speaking (2004), by Sari Luoma, states that it is designed for teachers and language testers. Divided into the following seven chapters, the book includes Luoma's findings from research, and approaches to developing valid speaking assessments.
1. Introduction
2. The nature of speaking
3. Speaking tasks
4. Speaking scales
5. Models
6. Developing test specifications
7. Examples of speaking tasks
8. Ensuring reliable and valid speaking assessment

Developing valid assessments, Luoma argues, requires developers who "define the kind of speaking they want to test in a particular context; develop tasks and rating criteria that test this; inform the examinees about what they test; and make sure that the testing and rating processes actually follow the stated plans" (p. 28).

This book is one of a series of language assessment texts published by Cambridge University Press.
