To expand access to information about COVID-19 to Deaf and hard-of-hearing residents, Virginia has opened the nation’s first American Sign Language (ASL) video call center for COVID-19 information. Virginia residents who are Deaf and hard of hearing can call into the center and communicate directly in ASL via video calls to get accurate and detailed information about COVID-19 without the need for relying on interpreters. This video call format allows for ASL speakers to have direct access to information and to ask questions and get clarification in their primary language. This is a great example of adaptable real-world language use.
