This historical linguistics volume investigates a series of informal vernacular letters written by emigrants to the former colonies of Britain. These letters demonstrate varieties of English that do not always appear in later sources and are not informed by considerations of standards or conformity. These letters provide a valuable source of data in tracking the development of features found in American, Canadian, South African, Australian, and New Zealand English.
