In this long-time running blog dedicated to the teaching and learning of Mandarin Chinese, the author calls our attention to the use of pinyin not only as a tool for beginning learners, but also found naturally in the Chinese community as a marketing strategy that removes gender marking on Chinese words that otherwise would be impossible to do when utilizing Chinese characters.
