TitleCall for Papers: 2005 Convention, South Atlantic Modern Language Association
Body
Session of the American Association of Teachers of German: Politics in the
German Language Classroom, Atlanta, Georgia, 4 - 6 November 2005

Recent exchanges on the AATG listerv provide the basis for this year's topic. It
has been said that the most conservative of all beliefs is that one could ever
be "apolitical," yet many in our field feel bound to achieve just that in the
classroom. Carl Schmidt claimed that "totalitarianism is the absence of
political discussion" and Henry Kissinger slammed educators with the quip
that "the politics of the academy are so petty, precisely because the stakes are
so low." Can we be apolitical? Do we have a duty to engage politics? Are the
stakes really so low? What is the role of politics in the classroom, on the
listserv or in second language education? We invite papers that seek to
answer these questions and provide practical solutions for pedagogical
practice. Topics are open to treat issues of historical, actual, and social
politics and how these can or why they should not be treated in the
classroom. Can we talk about the Second World War, current politics, or the
popularity of "Schnappi" in light of declining birth rates in Germany? Are we
allowed to voice our own opinions? If so, how can one do it without
intimidating students who do not share one's opinions? Presentations treating
issues of institutional limitations, linguistic limitations or providing material
and methodological examples are most welcome.
