In this two-part blog series, Judie Haynes outlines ten different types of scaffolds that strengthen an English learner’s comprehension of content.
Part 1 details the following strategies:
• using visuals, realia, and multimedia;
• connecting new information to prior experiences and learning;
• using miming, gestures, and modeling;
• preteaching academic vocabulary and key concepts; and
• supporting EL writing using sentence frames.
Part 2 details the following strategies:
• graphic organizers;
• use English learners' first language;
• think aloud to model thought processes;
• use sentence stems or frames for academic conversations; and
• small group or partner work.
