The Northeast Conference Back on Broadway!
March 31 – April 3, 2005
New York Marriott Marquis Hotel on Broadway

Conference Theme:
"Opening Cultural Windows in the Year of Languages"

“Act I” will be a dramatization of responses by learners and teachers to the
general question "What does it mean to teach and learn culture in the foreign
language classroom?" A multimedia presentation will focus our attention on
definitions of culture, ways of assessing cultural proficiency, beliefs about
culture, and instructor and student experiences. Our Opening General
Session format will continue to reflect a desire to avoid speeches and to
generate real discussion of the issues we face through a provocative and
exciting approach. We are on Broadway, and it shows!

“Act II”demonstrates why evaluations of the Northeast Conference have been
glowing for over 50 years:

* a huge and inviting exhibit hall with a variety of companies,
* a program of outstanding workshops and sessions, and
* the opportunities for professional networking and collegiality that make
attendance at the Northeast Conference seem like "coming home"!

“Act III” is composed of the "value added" features that make the Northeast
Conference different from any other:

* high school students may attend at no charge and enjoy special
programming provided for them;
* attendees who are unfamiliar with or alone in New York can spend an
evening "out on the town" with native New Yorker guides from our profession;
* session types range from hands-on to panel to poster;
* we will schedule one-hour "get to know a new language" sessions where
you can try your hand at something different (ASL, Chinese, Greek, Arabic,
etc.);
* a job clinic on employment outside the educational field
