Innovating Undergraduate French Studies: Making Curricular and Pedagogical Change Happen
April 20, 2019
University of Texas at Austin

This colloquium will convene faculty from different US institutions of higher learning in order to discuss ways to innovate and improve today’s undergraduate French Studies curriculum.

The most recent MLA Report paints a rather grim picture of declining enrollments in foreign language departments. In particular, national enrollments in undergraduate French programs have declined by approximately 11% between 2013-2016. Even more concerning is that the decline seems to be accelerating. What can French faculty do to reverse the decline? Can we attract more students with a rejuvenated French Studies major? If so, what would it look like? In short, how can we redefine our field to maintain its relevance in today’s changing intellectual marketplace? These are the questions that the colloquium seeks to address.
