The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages' Center for Assessment, Research, and Development (CARD) is happy to announce its 2019 Proficiency and Performance Summer Institute. Here are the dates and locations: --- This two-day workshop introduces the ACTFL rating scale, the structure of the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and techniques of administering and rating the OPI, including its applications in the language classroom. Participants observe and conduct live practice interviews at Novice and Intermediate proficiency levels. Participation in a MOPI Assessment Workshop is the first step toward becoming an ACTFL Certified OPI Tester with Limited Certification. Registration deadline: April 20 --- Intended as an introduction to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012 – Writing, this workshop introduces participants to the major and minor level descriptors and the criteria for assigning a global writing proficiency rating. Participants explore a variety of writing tasks across levels of proficiency, evaluate language samples based on the criteria as described in the guidelines, and design appropriate writing activities and writing assessment prompts at the four major levels. Registration deadline: April 22 --- This four-day workshop introduces the ACTFL rating scale, the structure of the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and techniques of administering and rating the OPI, including its applications in the language classroom. Participants observe and conduct live practice interviews across all proficiency levels (Novice through Superior). Participation in a Full OPI Assessment Workshop is the first step toward becoming an ACTFL Certified OPI Tester with Full Certification. Registration deadline: May 3 --- The two-day WPT Rater Training Workshop introduces participants to the ACTFL Writing Scale and the protocol for rating the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) at all levels of proficiency. Participants will become familiar with the assessment criteria for writing, the structure of the WPT, and will gain practice in applying the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012—Writing to the rating of samples in their target language (when available). Following the workshop, participants will be eligible to apply for Full WPT Rater certification. Registration deadline: May 5 --- OPI Familiarization: Intended for all language professionals, this one or two-day workshop familiarizes participants with the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, ACTFL Rating Scale, and the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview. Participants will hear samples at each proficiency level and discuss the implications of proficiency for academic and professional purposes. The two-day option provides additional emphasis on the implications and applications for instruction and can be customized to address specific program needs and goals. AAPPL Familiarization: This one-day introduction to the ACTFL Assessment of Performance towards Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is intended for all language professionals. This workshop will link proficiency and performance to show how these concepts both inform the AAPPL and can be used to assess growth in the three modes of communication. Identifying the traits of Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced learners will be addressed and ideas for moving students along the continuum will be discussed.
