Facilitating Second Language Acquisition in Elementary and Secondary
Physical Education Classes

[Source: The Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (2004)]
This article focuses on facilitating second language acquisition in elementary
and secondary physical education classes. Increasingly, there is a need for
teachers to become familiar with ways to make course content accessible to
students whose native language is not English and to actively facilitate
language acquisition for those students.

The physical world of sport and physical activity can offer rich opportunities for
linguistic interaction involving both social and academic aspects of English.
With the natural and abundant opportunities to supplement verbal
explanations with physical demonstrations, a variety of movement activities,
and other visuals, physical education teachers are already well equipped to
make course content comprehensible.

The Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (JOPERD) is
published monthly by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education,
Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), a nonprofit organization, 1900
Association Drive, Reston, VA 20191, 703/476-3400.
