Senate Committee Holds Hearing on Native American Language Revitalization
August 22, 2018

The Senate Committee Hearing on the efforts to revitalize Native American Languages was a great success in both making new connections at DHS as well as hearing positive testimony from Senators and panelist alike about the tangible and intangible value that Native American languages bring to this country. JNCL-NCLIS was in attendance and distributed dozens of America’s Languages Call to Action one-pagers.

After the hearing, JNCL met with the new Commissioner of the Administration of Native Americans, Jeannie (Jean Carol) Hovland, during which she was given a hard copy of the full Congressionally commissioned AAAS report for her and her staff to review. Ms. Hovland is a veteran Hill staffer, working in the office of Sen. Thune (R-SD) on Tribal Affairs. Now only two months into her new tenure as Commissioner, she eager to learn more about the ANA and wants to continue our conversation in upcoming meetings with our office.
