The Asia Society released two new CELIN briefs in June. In "Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for Elementary Chinese and Immersion Programs," Rita Oleksak and Betsy Hart describe highly effective strategies for curriculum development and instruction, based on six principles from STARTALK, a federal critical language project that has offered students and teachers in grades K–16 "creative and engaging summer experiences that strive to exemplify best practices in language education and in language teacher development." In "Parents as Partners in Their Children’s Chinese Immersion Education: Making Decisions and Providing Support," Maquita Alexander and Elizabeth Weise describe the many hopes that parents have when they enroll their children in a Chinese immersion program, along with the questions they have and challenges they face as they support their children in their Chinese language learning over the years. In addition to answering many questions that parents have, the brief provides helpful tips for program staff in supporting and engaging parents.
