Title | Article: Using Graphic Novel for Peace Education in an English Language Classroom |

A pedagogy of multiliteracies using graphic novels can enhance reading engagement and achievement, reinforcing students’ senses of their identities as readers who are learners and thinkers (Guthrie, 2004). However, there is scant mention of how such multimodal texts can be used for fostering students’ critical literacies and promoting peace education in the English Learner (EL) classroom. This article provides a rationale for integrating peace education into the EL curriculum and examples of methodological approaches to helping post-secondary teachers use graphic novels as a powerful tool to cultivate students’ critical thinking abilities and a disposition for peace and democracy.
