Title | Learning a New Language Gives Teacher New Ideas |
Body |
Spanish teacher Rosalyn Rhodes has been learning Chinese. Her experience being a novice language learner again has given her lots to reflect about. Among her conclusions that will have impact in her Spanish classes this year:
• Puzzles, problems, and patterns to discover stimulate intellectual curiosity.
• Learning is most stimulating when it’s centered around a learner’s own personal content.
• Meaningful communication with real people (who are positive) is essential.
• Immediate feedback validates effort to use a new language, lets learners know when they’re “doing it right,” and gives the information needed for continued growth.
• Learning about the target culture inspires students to experience it on their own.
