The Fifth National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (5SSHL2018) will be held at the University of Iowa, Iowa City from April 5 through April 7. Dr. Julia Oliver Rajan from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Iowa and the 5SSHL committee cordially invite researchers, K-12 teachers, and graduate students to this event.
The symposium will consist of:
• Research presentations from scholars, K-12 teachers, and graduate students
• Three hands-on workshops for K-16 instructors: methodologies for teaching heritage speakers, mixed classrooms, and telecollaboration
• Two panel discussions: the myths of standardized Spanish in the classroom and the inclusion of transnationalism in the heritage language pedagogy
The organizers invite researchers, K-12 teachers, graduate students working in the fields of education, linguistics, and Spanish for heritage speakers to submit abstracts for 20-minute presentations.
The conference will also host its 3rd Creative Writing Contest, and the organizers invite high school and college undergraduate students to send in their poems and essays to Dr. Ariana Ruiz at 5sshl2018gmail.com.
The deadline for proposals and submissions is November 20, 2017.
