The Fundación del Español Urgente, also known as Fundéu, has picked “populismo” as the 2016 Spanish Word of the Year. The word has been in existence for some time, but it has acquired a new negative connotation.

Other finalists included “abstenciocracia,” “ningufoneo,” “vendehúmos,” and “youtubero.”
