[Source: November eTEA Times] The Education Alliance and Providence
Public Schools will host the Latino Family Literacy Forum in Providence, on
November 30, 2004. The event will heighten awareness of the importance of
family literacy and highlight the success of the Toyota Family Literacy
Program (TFLP); a combined effort of Providence Public Schools and the
National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL). The program is made possible
through partnership and funding from Toyota, to effectively reach both parents
and their school-aged children in Providence who are at risk for academic
failure.

The agenda will feature a presentation from Sarita Brown, founder and
president of Exelencia in Education, and an expert panel to discuss current
research on effective practices for increasing family literacy, the vital
importance of this topic to the Latino community, and national, state, and local
perspectives on literacy initiatives. Presenters will include Sharon Darling,
President and Founder of NCFL, Anthony J. Colon, Vice President of the
Center for Community Educational Excellence at National Council of La
Raza, Senator Juan M. Pichardo of the RI General Assembly, and Dr. Peter
McWalters, Commissioner of Education.
