Teaching Culture in East Asian-Language Classes
March 11, 2017
Boston College High School

Language is more than grammar, syntax, and vocabulary—it’s also the gateway to culture. But how do you teach culture effectively and engagingly to students of different ages? This conference will showcase strategies for introducing students to Japanese and Chinese culture in their language-learning classrooms at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. We’ll discuss a variety of topics—including best practices for using literature, films, art, food, and music in the classroom—that can help students think more deeply about culture and other worldviews in ways that move beyond stereotypes and generalizations. This conference is open to all Japanese and Chinese-language teachers in grades K-12. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
