Last Tuesday she posted a about performance vs. proficiency on her blog, with the provocative title “Forget about Proficiency.” She says, “proficiency is a cone, but performance is a line.” Students can expand the difficulty or breadth of their performance, but advancing in proficiency requires doing a harder task across an ever-widening range of contexts.
