Summer Academy in Leipzig for U.S.-American Faculty in German
May 28 – June 11, 2016

Co-sponsored by the German-American Fulbright Commission and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) the Summer Academy aims to offer professional development in areas relevant to the teaching of German including German language, literature and culture as well as in professional and higher education. The seminar is based at interDaF at Leipzig University’s Herder Institute. The program language will be German.

The Academy will give an overview of current developments in German secondary and post-secondary education, including information on the German high school system, vocational training, recent German and European higher education reforms such as the Bologna process, and demographic developments and ethnic diversity in contemporary Germany. An additional focus of the program will be on teaching German as a Foreign Language, and participants will become acquainted with latest didactical methods in this field as developed and implemented at interDaF in Leipzig. The Academy will also include class room visits and opportunities to meet colleagues from other academic fields, various experts, students and administrators. An excursion program including a day trip to Berlin will complement the academic sessions. Finally, the program will highlight some of the structures, regional priorities and current developments in this part of Eastern Germany.

U.S.-American Faculty in German, preferably teaching full-time at smaller colleges or institutions that offer German as a major or a German/German Studies degree, are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to younger faculty who have not had a similar experience in Germany during the last 5 years. Applicants must be in the possession of a valid U.S. passport.
