Coordinator of Second Language Assessment Projects


The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota is seeking a Coordinator of Second Language Assessments Projects funded by Title VI Language Resource Center funds and other federally- and state-funded foreign language and English as a Second Language assessment projects.

Appointment:
Full-time professional/academic position.
This is a one-year, renewable appointment based on availability of funding.
Preferred start date is September 1, 2003 or as soon as possible.

Duties:
* Coordinate the development of proficiency-based foreign/second language assessment instruments including including task and item development, field-testing, data collection, development and refinement of rating criteria and scales, analysis and interpretation of results, and coordination of test revision.

* Supervise and contribute to the development of web-based classroom assessment frameworks and tools for CARLA's Virtual Assessment Center (VAC). Includes creation of interactive tasks for the professional development modules of the VAC.

* Create and lead training workshops and summer institutes on developing proficiency-oriented language assessments.

* Create professional development materials for teachers for use in workshops and institutes and to post on the web.

* Work closely with Assessment Program Associate in all aspects of assessment.

* Provide support to teachers participating in CARLA-related assessment projects

* Evaluate student performance on CARLA's assessment products and coordinate reporting of results/findings to field-testing participants.

* Lead dissemination efforts of CARLA's assessment products and findings through conference presentations, articles, and press releases.

* Write reports on the progress of assessment development efforts for federal and internal reporting purposes.

* Act as a resource on assessment issues for the language teaching community both within and outside the University.

Essential Qualifications:
* Experience with foreign language test design, development, and analysis.
* Masters' degree or A.B.D. in a field related to foreign language education, foreign language assessment, or second-language acquisition.
* Functional competence in one or more foreign languages.
* Proficiency with technology.
* Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, work with teachers, and work as part of a team.

Desired Qualifications:
*Experience/proficiency in creating assessment tools using technology.

Salary:
$35,000 minimum.

Selection Criteria:
1) Strong background in practical test design, development, and analysis, particularly in the area of proficiency-based and task-based assessment.
2) Strong background in the concepts and issues related to the use of technology in test development in foreign languages and ESL.
3) Demonstrated ability to coordinate team efforts related to test development, field-test efforts, and professional development workshops on test development issues.
