Alissa Stern, US Director of BASAbali.org, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that strives to strengthen the Balinese language, writes an illuminating article about how governments and education systems can value languages and prevent language extinction. “The first step in reversing this decline is the simplest but also the toughest: local communities, national governments, and the international community need to value language diversity. Not all do.” She provides examples of how this can be accomplished.
