TitleCALLM Modules: Extending the Learning Opportunities for Advanced Language Learners by Deborah Cooke, CASLS Instructional Designer
Body

In 2011, CASLS began developing Chinese Academic Language Learning Modules (CALLM) to increase course options for advanced-level language learning for students in the Language Flagship Programs. CALLM are content-based courses designed to explicitly integrate relevant, domain-specific content while simultaneously increasing students' Chinese proficiency.

Delivered in an online format, CALLM courses enhance students' experience through the use of multimedia, digital collaboration tools and up-to-date information without sacrificing the one-to-one learning component unique to the Flagship experience.

The most recently developed CALLM course was a collaborative effort with the University of Oregon's Planning, Public Policy, and Management department and resulted in the course "Sustainable Urban Development in China." The course, which was delivered for the first time this summer, includes video-captured lectures supplemented with critical readings and additional web resources. Students were paired with native speakers to increase the opportunity for collaborative learning and peer-to-peer mentoring.

Instructor Yizhao Yang was excited to see her successful face-to-face version of this course converted to an online venue and to learn how she would need to adapt her traditional teaching methods. She comments, "I think the class went well, and I have enjoyed teaching online. In fact, I plan to apply what I have learned from the online teaching experience to a new flip class that I will be teaching in winter."

The majority of students who enrolled in the course expressed satisfaction that the course increased their linguistic skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. They also expressed satisfaction in meeting with their language partner to practice skills, review materials, and assess each other's work in the course.
CALLM is funded by The Language Flagship through the National Security Education Program.
