American Indian Language Development Institute
Language, Landscape and Lifeways
June 2- July 3, 2014

For Indigenous people, language is the key to local knowledge about land and lifeways. Language is what allows for full participation with the natural world. Recent global concerns related to climate change, sustaining natural resources and other ecological issues has highlighted the importance of accessing and understanding traditional Indigenous knowledge. Using traditional cultural and ecological knowledge to teach language is the focus for AILDI 2014. Culture and place based curriculum, Indigenous geography, spirituality in language, language documentation with a focus on biodiversity, and language immersion in the home are some of the AILDI 2014 course topics.
