From Samurai and Ninja to Bushido and Karate: The History and Culture of Martial Japan

Join us for an inspired look at the history and culture of martial arts in Japan and empower your students to make a deeper connection to this fascinating country. Students of all ages learn about the samurai and the martial arts through media and popular culture, yet how much is historically accurate and not just based on myth or legend? In this seminar, we will explore the martial history and culture of Japan from the Heian Period (794-1185) to the present day, including how the martial arts and their portrayal has impacted the imagination of US students. You will take away a variety of interesting resources both for your classroom and for furthering your knowledge of this unique tradition.

Tatami and Hamburgers: Japanese Culture and Daily Life

U.S. students love learning about the daily life of Japanese children at home, at school, and in their neighborhoods. Join us as we explore Japanese cultural artifacts and the engaging stories behind them, and examine seasonal customs and their influence on arts, literature and celebrations. In addition, we will introduce you to a comprehensive new online resource "Kyo no Machiya" developed by Boston Children's Museum and based on their Japanese House. Together we will take a virtual tour and you will learn how to incorporate this and many other exciting online resources immediately into your curriculum.
