Workshop: FOCUS on ASSESSMENT of HISPANIC/BILINGUAL CHILDREN

A Workshop for Early Childhood Educators, Speech and Language
Specialists, Educators and Graduate Students in these fields.

Cost: Free! Sponsored by Multicultural Task Force, and University Center on
Excellence.

When: Saturday, June 26, 9 am to 4 pm, with morning and afternoon
refreshments provided, lunch on your own 12-1 pm.

Where: University of Oregon, CSB 201, Eugene, Oregon

Presented by:
-- Kathi Hoffer, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, bilingual speech/language pathologist,
CDRC, and adjunct professor, U of O CDS program, with 30 years experience
working with Hispanic individuals.

-- Kyra Carroll, M.A.(Applied Linguistics), M.S., CCC-SLP, bilingual speech/
language pathologist, CDRC, past ESL/EFL instructor, work experience in
Central America and the Middle East.

What: The focus will be on assessing Hispanic and other bilingual children,
using case studies, with information on the following:

- Bilingualism and language development
- BICS & CALP
- Normal problems in second language acquisition
- Over/under representation in special education

Assessment of bilingual children -
- Preschool
- School-aged
- Formal measures - problems with tests and norms
- Hands-on experience with a variety of test instruments
- Informal measures
- A multidisciplinary team approach
- Use of Interpreters
- Intervention issues with bilingual children
- IFSP/IEP considerations
- Second language instruction
- Family and community recommendations
