Title | Resources and Textbooks about Pronunciation, ESL |
Body | The following question produced several responses. "I would like to know if there is a text or resource available that would help explain English rules of pronunciation and stress." The best pronunciation text I have ever worked with (and my personal favorite) is Linda Grant's Well Said (Heinle & Heinle). All pronunciation questions will be answered and are taught to the students in a communicative fashion. Ochoa, A. (13 Apr. 2004). Re: Pronunciation. I find 'Targeting' more suitable for high intermediate to advanced classes. For self-study, I'd recommend Barron's 'American Accent Training.' For beginners, we use 'Small Talk Jazz Chants' along with the 'New Interchange' series. The pronunciation features of 'New Interchange' are VERY useful. Sandeen, S. (13 Apr. 2004). Re: Pronunciation. I have been teaching Accent Improvement for years at the community college level- high intermediate students. By far, the best Pronunciation Texts available are English Pronunciation for International Students (Pearson Education) by Dr. Paulette Dale and Lillian Poms, (this is generic for all learners regardless of native language), and English Pronunciation for Spanish Speakers: Vowels, and English Pronunciation for Spanish Speakers: Consonants (also by Dr. Dale and Poms and published by Pearson Ed.) There are self tests and very engaging exercises. There are wonderful pictures of mouth and lips and a terrific section entitled To the Teacher with diagnostic test guidelines for teachers to do a systematic analysis of a student's error patterns. I have recently worked on a paper on teaching Pronunciation. While doing so I have found 2 books really helpful. They are Dalton and Barbara(1994) Pronunciation and Kelly Gerald's(2000) How to teach Pronunciation. Gerald's book deals with more current issues. I think in teaching pronunciation, they will be helpful. Tasneen, W. (19 Apr. 2004). Re: Pronunciation. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list.
