The National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku, short for Kokuritsu
Minzokugaku Hakubutsukan) was established in 1974. It also serves as an
Inter-University Research Institute under the Monbukagakusho, Ministry of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT, formerly
Monbusho).

The general functions of Minpaku are
* ethnological (anthropological) research
* the collection and conservation of ethnographic materials
* public exhibition.

With these activities, the museum aims to promote a general understanding
and awareness of people, societies and cultures throughout the world.
